Well, that was stupid

A picture of my new laptop

SO, some of you have probably wonder where I've been for the past few weeks, site hasn't been updated, no new drawings, what happened? Well if you followed my Bluesky or Tumblr (or Tele channel), you'd know already, but basically, my computer shit itself. I've had an ASUS ROG Strix for the past few years, first laptop I really bought with my own laptop, ofc it was gmaing focused since I travel a ton and can't really get a desktop, plus I tend to lack the space for one anyways. I got it back in June 2023, but the thing decided to break itself for no reason.

Specifically, was on October 30th, yeah, ONE day before Halloween, and the month where I was doing a whole bunch of stuff for Halloween at that. Was using it like normal (admittedly had a lot of stuff open at once), and the thing just shut itself off without warning, it had done that previously and of course I was slightly annoyed by it, so I just went to turn it back on... only for the thing to shut itself off again as soon as it reached the lock screen. Turned it back on, same results, turned it on after letting it cool down a little, same results. So now I'm panicking, the thing has basically broken itself and I had NO clue why. I tried everything I could think of, literally waiting and doing nothing for a few minutes, it seemed to work then it shut itself off. I reinstall Windows, nothing. I set a system restore, nothing. Hell, I even went out of my way to uninstall all the apps and programs, it seemed to work for a bit and again, nothing. I reinstall my drivers, nothing. I do chkdsk a million times, nothing. So I'm utterly stumped and realize the thing is fucked beyond the realm where I can just reasonably fix it, so took it to a local repair shop in my area and hoped it would be back in a week or so, but the guy sorta dragged his feet with fixing it, so in the meantime I was using my dad's laptop, ofc it's way weaker but it held me over for the time being.

Then later on I get a call from him (or rather, my dad called him) and told him it WAS a hardware problem, I initally thought it was something like, the termal paste on the laptop dried up and wasn't working right, turns out it was way worse than that. Apparently, SOMETHING in the motherboard broke and was causing it to crash, along with killing the speakers in the laptop, legit the speakers stopped working too, plugging in headphones gives audio, but nothing from the speakers. So the guy was gonna get another motherboard, but the issue is that those things cost up to ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS, so he was like "nah that's too expensive, just get another laptop at that point", which I had been planning on doing after it initially broke anyways. So after getting it back and backing up what hadn't been backed up, I waited till black friday deals started and snagged a new laptop, a Lenovo Legion (Pro 5 specifically), it's way beefier than my old one and apparently way more reliable to boot, which was important to me in particular, since the ASUS was fucking up beforehand anyways, this isn't the first time it's messed up either, it literally bricked itself back in early 2024 when I tried to do a BIOS update, so that was another case where I didn't have it for a few weeks and had to borrow one of my parents' laptops again, though it was worse in that situtation since it was before I properly had a job and was dealing with my shitty external drive that was slowly killing itself, so uh, not fun.

Kind of a long entry this time but just needed to get that out there, as a long explanation of what happened and what's to come, basically, I've been updating and installing all my old stuff on the new laptop for the past few hours, initially ran into a snag where the network drivers weren't working since I installed Windows 10 on it after installing a fresh SSD in it (since it just comes with 1TB, bought a 4TB Samsung SSD and opened it up to install it), but had to upgrade to Windows 11 (much to my chagrin, but it is what it is, it's not the worst after removing bloat and AI jank) to properly use Wi-Fi. Once I get the pen drivers and CSP installed, a drawing is coming, hopefully I can squeeze in a new character page before the month is over, but we'll see.
